Records and Registration FAQs: Orientation

Do I have to take Smart Start?

All first-time SPC students seeking an AA or AS degree are required to take Smart Start. When you attempt to register for a class during your first semester at SPC, the system will prompt you to add a Smart Start course. The subject and course number for the class is SSC 1101. This is a required non-credit course that is free and is graded as “pass/fail.”

Students returning from academic suspension or dismissal will be required to enroll in a variation of Smart Start referred to as Smart Restart. The subject and course number for this class is SSC 1102.

If you live in Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee and Hillsborough you are required to attend the Smart Start course face to face. There is also a Getting Started Orientation that will take place before Smart Start begins. Once you have registered, we recommend that you speak to an advisor for potential additional guidelines.
